“There is no sincere love than the love of food”... George Bernard
Shaw
This the quote is probably the best one to describe the tryst between Bengalis and food! Bong’s obsession with good food is a well-known fact. In most Bengali families
the day starts with the thought of food and ends with the planning for the next
day’s menu. Even while eating one meal, they plan for the next one! Hence a
Bengali Mom’s kitchen is always open and forever functional! Born in a typical
Bengali family I too grew up with the idea that food is an essential (actually
it is) part of our life and good and nutritious food is very important for the
development of body and mind! Now, good and nutritious, though an oxymoron does
sound interesting and challenging! Thus my next recipe is an endeavour to
present a nourishing and nutritious sweet option ... an amalgamation of health
and taste...
In
today’s world no one wants to spend much time in the kitchen. So today, when the
thought of making something special popped in my mind and I had no intention of
spending hours preparing it, Date Roll struck to my mind! Since
this recipe doesn’t require many ingredients, my very next step was to get into
the kitchen and set the ball roll(ing..)
for Date
Roll :)
Preparation Time: 45 min
Setting Time:
2 hrs (approx)
Ingredients:
1. Dates ..............500gms
2. Poppy seeds... 4 tbsp
3. Dry fruits (Almonds,
Pista, Kaju ).........1/4 cup
4. Ghee / Butter... 2 tbsp.
Method:
In a
non stick wok dry roast poppy seeds on medium flame till it leaves aroma! Spread
it in a flat plate or tray. Deseed dates and chop them very finely. Put
ghee/butter in the wok, add the dates and mix with a wooden spatula constantly on medium flame till it becomes mushy. At this point be careful and reduce the heat to avoid overcooking! Add dry fruits and mix thoroughly. Take it off the gas. Roll
the dough, when still warm, into two small or one big cylinder. Roll in poppy seeds properly. Let it come to room temperature. Wrap in aluminium foil and refrigerate for almost two hrs. Cut into equal
sections along its length when it is firm. Store in an airtight container and
enjoy this guilt-free sweet whenever you crave for something sweet! It stays
fresh in normal cool temperature for almost 7 days and in the refrigerator for a month!
Though it can be relished round the year, winter is the best time to have
it.

Few
years back I came across this recipe on Facebook! Though it’s a very simple procedure
to follow, on my first attempt it didn’t come up very well as the sticky
texture didn’t satisfy my perfectionist nature. The second time when I tried this
it was a complete failure, as out of an experiment I ground the dates in a mixer
before putting in the wok! But practice makes a woman perfect, so this time it
was a 100% success and its beautiful natural colour and smooth texture is a
treat for the eyes!
This savoury is naturally sweet as it doesn’t contain any
added sugar! And without putting much effort it’s ready to be served. So enjoy
this sugar-free... guilt-free...effortless sweet and let your body gets
nourished by the goodness of Dates and dry fruits! Happy dating J

Looks delicious. What should be the consistency of the mixture?
